Hartlage Fence Company began as Amco Fence in 1956 and adopted its current name in 1958. We have served customers in Louisville and Southern Indiana for generations with quality fence installations. Our team started in a small shop on Dixie Highway and now operates from a 3-acre facility on Old Third Street, and we're proud to have built strong relationships with both residential and commercial clients across the region.
We are now part of Mills Fence, one of the Midwest's largest fence contractors. This partnership expands our reach and increases our product selection. We now offer more options and deliver greater value through added resources and inventory. Our team supplies fences, access control gate systems, professional installation, and material-only options. We're ready to support your next project.
Sid Hartlage started the business as a franchise of Amco Fence Co. in 1956. He worked from a small shop on Dixie Highway. He brought his brother, Kenny, into the business in 1957. The brothers focused on the South End of Louisville. They sold chain link fences to residential customers across Southwest Jefferson County. The company adopted the Hartlage Fence name in 1958. The business grew quickly through the 1960s.
The company moved to a larger location on the Outer Loop in 1972. This move strengthened its role in the local fence market. Ken Hartlage and his wife, Mary, purchased the company in 1982. They built a strong business that focused on customer relationships. They served both residential and commercial clients.
Jeff Hartlage joined the company in 1984 after college. He worked as a salesman and introduced new ideas. The company added wood privacy fences and automated gate systems. The business expanded through the 1980s. Hartlage Fence became a regional commercial leader. The company served major clients, including Jim Beam Distillery and Reynolds Metals.
The company moved to its current location on Old Third Street to support continued growth. The team increased inventory and added an on-site gate shop. Hartlage Fence introduced ornamental aluminum fencing for new neighborhoods in East Louisville in the early 1990s. Jeff Hartlage became President in 2002 and continued the family legacy.
